Over a time period of 4 months spanning from fall 2012 to early 2013, I worked with very talented multi-instrumentalist José Miguel Márquez here at Hot Milk Studio on his new album Natural released on Raumer Records. The sessions were focussed but as natural as the album’s title – needless to say, we were very pleased with the results!

Background on José Miguel Márquez

José Miguel Márquez is one Chile’s most well-known musical exports. Born in the Atacama desert, he began at an early age to play and perform in the colourful world of Latin American music. On his new album – Natural – he travels an acoustic journey through South America and its many rhythms. In addition to Native American flutes such as zampoña, quena, quenacho and moceño, he also sings and also plays cuatro, ukulele, guitar and charango. Whether it be bamboo or palisander, José Miguel Márquez’ playing and singing always celebrates the dances, longing, love and landscape of his continent.

José Miguel Márquez was a founding member of legendary Chilean group Illapu and has been on stage for more than 35 years including tours of 28 countries with concerts in the Sydney Opera House, Paris Olympia, Frankfurter Oper and Carnegie Hall in New York.

As a solo artist, José Miguel Marquez has performed on 30 CDs. He has received 8 Golden and 10 Platinum Records for his compositions for Illapu. In 2005, he was bestowed with the President’s Prize (Premio Presidente de la Republica) from the Chiliean president.
